The Benefits of Aloe Vera Products for Skin

For centuries, the plant Aloe vera has been employed as a natural solution for burns, rashes, and other skin conditions. These days we have 21st-century studies to substantiate the medical claims.

Research shows that Aloe is effective against such skin conditions as psoriasis, skin ulcers, and painful burns. Aloe vera is packed with anti-inflammatory properties that reduce redness and irritation. It’s also a natural antiseptic and antibacterial solution.

Confusingly, this plant has a number of synonymous Latin names, including Aloe barbadensis. Some topical cream manufacturers list this name in their ingredients. It's all the same plant. The most familiar name is Aloe vera, so that's what we'll stick with here.

Anti-inflammatory Aloe vera products are excellent aftercare solutions for hot stone massages, depilatory waxes, acupuncture, facials, and laser treatments.

Let’s take a closer look at the nourishing benefits of Aloe for healthy skin.

Aloe is Packed with Vitamins

Aloe vera is rich in enzymes, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, and vitamins. In particular, Aloe is rich in vitamins A and C, which are beneficial for ageing skin.

Vitamin A is found in anti-ageing retinol products. It helps prevent the sun from depleting precious collagen. Healthy collagen gives skin a youthful glow and elasticity.

Vitamin A isn’t just a benefit, it’s a necessity. Skin literally requires vitamin A to function properly. It even has anti-wrinkle properties.

Aloe’s other important skin vitamin is C. Vitamin C helps regenerate cells in the body, and that includes skin cells. Vitamin C-enriched Aloe topicals fight off harmful free radicals that damage skin.

Like vitamin A, vitamin C also speeds up the collagen production process. Skin needs these vitamins to thrive, making Aloe an ideal natural solution for skincare and massage.

Aloe is an All-Natural Acne Treatment

Aloe vera products are packed with anti-inflammatory properties, making it a natural skin treatment for acne. Aloe vera products are ideal for surface acne, redness, and irritation. Aloe is also antibacterial, which is essential for fighting off infection from acne sores.

Aloe is so gentle it can be combined with medical treatments for acne. For example, some acne treatments, like Accutane, can produce red, dry skin during treatment. Aloe can decrease the side effects of Accutane without compromising its effectiveness.

Unlike many makeup brands and topics, Aloe vera acne products can remain on the skin for hours and not produce breakouts. Most of all, Aloe helps reduce the appearance of acne scars, and that can increase one’s confidence exponentially.

Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Many factors contribute to fine lines and wrinkles. Stress, trauma, genetics, sun damage, pollution, unhealthy eating, and even certain professions can increase fine lines and wrinkles.

Since aloe is so rich in vitamin A, it’s one of the best natural solutions against ageing skin. It also treats issues that increase wrinkles and imperfections, like dark spots from sun damage, skin scratches, cold sores, and abrasions.

The vitamins in Aloe are ideal for turning back the clock on ageing skin. However, it’s gentle enough for children to use. Don’t forget about that healthy collagen. The collagen in Aloe improves moisture and flexibility in the skin, but it also tightens skin to reduce the look of wrinkles.

Perfect for Sun-Kissed Summer Skin

For those who can’t resist sun tanning and UV tanning beds, aloe vera is essential for protecting the skin.

Any UV exposure can harm skin, even those popular tanning beds. No tanning session is complete without nourishing Aloe aftercare. Tanners should also nourish their skin with Aloe beforehand to protect against harmful UV free radicals.

Aloe vera gel and cucumber help relieve redness around the eyes after tanning. Rub a little Aloe vera on some cucumber slices and place them over the eyes. Massaging aloe and almond oil into the skin also helps combat redness and dry skin.

Aloe vera is a common ingredient in natural sunscreen. For particularly hot days, it’s good to have fresh Aloe vera on hand to treat minor sunburns. You can even use a piece of aloe plant directly on the skin.

Aloe is excellent for hot summer days, but what about the cold?

Much is known about Aloe vera’s beneficial effects on sunburn, but little is known about its benefits for frostbite. Aloe was used for years as a natural frostbite remedy, but it’s advised to talk to a doctor first before attempting it.

Rejuvenates Dry and Itchy Skin

Skin can only take so much. The more you itch, the greater the skin damage will be. Nourishing Aloe vera products replenish the skin with moisture and new cells to transform dry, itchy skin.

Itchy skin is caused by a variety of factors. Allergies, stress, sunburns, side effects from medication, psoriasis, infections, and more conditions. As in acne treatment, gentle Aloe can help reduce itchiness and irritation without disrupting prescribed treatments.

The natural properties in Aloe help bind moisture to healthy skin cells. Its anti-inflammation properties also decrease skin irritation. These properties are the reason why aloe is such an effective natural treatment against eczema and other itchy skin conditions.

Aloe Speeds the Healing of Cuts and Burns

Untreated cuts, scrapes, and abrasions leave permanent marks in their wake. However, you can reduce the appearance of marks by using Aloe topicals on your skin. Use Aloe in conjunction with a prescribed treatment for best results.

Aloe is packed with antioxidants and vitamins, which help the body bounce back from wounds. Since it’s also a natural antibacterial, the skin is less susceptible to infections.

After treating a small skin wound, gently rub aloe vera products on the skin to retain moisture. Dry, cracked skin around the wounds can break open and lead to infection.

Aloe vera is Easy to Grow!

Many garden centres carry this common houseplant, and it will thrive for years in a south-facing window. As with other succulent plants, propagation is simple from cuttings. Cut a lower leaf from a healthy Aloe plant and allow the cut end to dry out. This should take three to four days. Once it has healed over, insert the cut end about one inch deep into regular potting soil — or "cacti and succulent soil" which has improved drainage. Keep the soil dry, and water after one week.

The leaf should slowly develop a root system, and then new leaves will appear in a radial spiral and a healthy new plant should be born. Water this desert-dwelling succulent never more than once a week. Aloe thrives on neglect and makes a very easy houseplant. Harvest the lowest (oldest) leaves as needed to treat cuts and wounds. Use a paring knife to slice open the leave and bring the sticky sap inside in contact with the damaged skin area.
