What is the Difference Between Ultrasound Gels and Lotions?

If you’re just branching out into the field of ultrasound therapies, you surely have some questions on your mind. For instance, what are ultrasound gels and lotions? What do they do and how are they different?

Does it matter which one you use for a particular treatment? And are they ideally suited for certain applications?

Fortunately, you’ll find the answers you’ve been looking for in the following comparison. In this guide, we’ll explain both the functions and the appropriate applications of these products. This way, you’ll know how best to stock up for your upcoming appointments.

Read on to learn all you need to know about ultrasound gels vs. lotions.

What are Ultrasound Gels?

Ultrasound gel doesn’t just lubricate the ultrasonic device for use on the skin. First and foremost, it is designed to aid the ultrasonic function of such devices.

The gel itself helps to conduct the ultrasonic vibrations. Specifically, it helps to control these vibrations acoustically so they do what we want them to.

It also creates sort of a seal between the skin and the device that locks out air bubbles. This allows ultrasonic imaging devices to work better with less interference.

You should know that ultrasound gel is infamous for feeling shockingly cold when it initially contacts the skin. It will be nicer for your patients/patrons if you first warm the gel with an ultrasound gel warmer.

What Are Ultrasound Lotions?

Ultrasound lotions are designed to do everything ultrasound gels do and more. They, too, are a conduit for the ultrasonic waves that seal out air bubbles.

But lotions are less, well, icky than the gels. The gel is sticky and unpleasant when it dries on the skin and must be wiped away after ultrasonic procedures. And of course, there’s the icy cold discomfort of the initial contact with the gel.

The lotions, however, are not as cold to start with. And they’re absorbed into the skin after the procedure. Plus, like any other lotion, they moisturize the skin, leaving it silky smooth instead of sticky.

Although, because they absorb into the skin, ultrasound lotions may require reapplication during long procedures, which can be inconvenient. Still, for these reasons, ultrasound lotions are best suited for therapeutic applications.

What Are the Best Applications of Ultrasound Gels?

Since lotions are great for therapeutic uses, and gels are great for basic function, the gels are typically cheaper. Thus, gels are the preferred choice for general medical uses that are critical for improving health.

That is, the procedure itself is likely more important to the patient than the slight discomfort they experience from the gel. Besides, the gels are a little more convenient to use for medical procedures like ultrasonic imaging.

What Are the Best Applications of Ultrasound Lotions?

Really, any ultrasonic therapy should be performed with the lotions. These procedures are usually for healing and relaxing, which will be hindered by the annoying side effects of using ultrasound gel. Spas, in particular, should use ultrasonic lotion exclusively.

How Will You Use Ultrasound Gels and Lotions?

Now that you know the differences between ultrasound gels and lotions, what will you do with them? Whatever you have in mind, remember this guide. Use this information to plan for your spa or physical therapy centre.
