Corner to Corner Clinic Cleaning
Even if the weather is still cold and the days are dark, calendar spring is nearly upon us. On Tuesday, March 19th, at 8:06pm, the sun will be crossing the Earth's equator from south to north, harkening in precisely six months of warmer weather and longer days. This is as good a time as any to discuss giving the therapeutic workspace a really thorough cleaning.
This is a good motivation to get deep into the cracks and crevices of the clinic space. This ritual is about detail, so go beyond sweeping and get out the vacuum cleaner attachments. This is the time of year to get into the corners and behind any furniture that is moveable. Once these surfaces are completely free of dust and debris, give them a wipe-down with a disinfectant cleaner like Benefect or Cavicide before replacing furniture or fixtures.
If you work in a clinic with fixtures like hydrocollators or towel warmers, this is the day to empty them and wipe them down from top to bottom. Use a mild bleach solution to make every internal surface sterile. Give treatment tables a complete wash down, not just the surface where clients lie, but the legs and shelves and support brackets too.
This is the day to put laundry bags in the laundry, not just towels and sheets. Today we're going to wash garbage receptacles inside and out. Dust around the ceiling, light fixtures, and tops of walls. Wash down aromatherapy diffusers, Himalayan salt lamps, incense burners... Wash mirrors with glass cleaner and dust around the tops of wall hangings and decorations. If there are houseplants in the space, wipe down their leaves with a damp cloth — they will thank you for it.
And air the place out, if possible. Open doors and windows if weather permits, to allow good ventilation. Or consider installing a fan. Too often clinic rooms can become stuffy after days of treatments.
Keeping a physical therapy clinic clean is crucial for maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for patients. Here are some ways therapists can ensure their workspace is spotless:
- Regular Cleaning Schedule: Establish a regular cleaning schedule for daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. This includes wiping down surfaces, sanitizing equipment, and disinfecting treatment tables after each use.
- Use of Disinfectants: Use hospital-grade disinfectants approved by relevant health authorities to clean surfaces and equipment effectively. Ensure that disinfectants are applied correctly and allowed to sit for the recommended contact time to kill germs.
- Hand Hygiene: Encourage frequent handwashing and/or the use of hand sanitizers for therapists, staff, and patients. Hand hygiene is essential for preventing the spread of infections.
- Laundry Protocol: Establish a protocol for laundering linens and towels used during therapy sessions. Ensure that they are washed with appropriate detergents at the correct temperature to kill bacteria and viruses.
- Equipment Maintenance: Regularly inspect and clean therapy equipment such as exercise balls, resistance bands, and therapy mats. Follow manufacturer guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting specific equipment.
- Waiting Area Maintenance: Keep the waiting area clean and tidy by regularly wiping down chairs, tables, and other surfaces. Provide hand sanitizers for patients and visitors.
- Staff Training: Provide thorough training to therapists and staff on proper cleaning and disinfection protocols. Emphasise the importance of maintaining a clean environment for patient safety.
- Regular Inspections: Conduct regular inspections of the clinic to identify areas that may need extra attention or improvement. Address any cleanliness issues promptly.
By implementing these practices, therapists can help ensure that their physical therapy clinic remains clean and hygienic, promoting the well-being of both patients and staff.
