What is a Massage Cream?

Like lotions, a massage cream is a blend of oil and water, but with a higher oil concentration (50-50 ratio of water and oil). Creams are thicker in consistency than lotions.

Crèmes provide a barrier that keeps your skin ultra-hydrated.

Body massage creams and most face crème’s are usually sold in a jar container or tub because of the thickness of the contents. Crème’s are not usually suitable for pumps.

Interesting Features of Massage Cream

  • Creams are an emulsion of water and oil
  • Crème’s are classified as either “oil in water” (o/w) or “water in oil” (w/o) emulsions
  • Creams/Crème’s are mostly water-based (O/W)
  • Some creams are oil based (W/O)
  • Creams often contain emulsifiers and preservatives which may cause contact allergy
  • The best choice for dry skin - use all year for hydrating extra dry skin
  • Use in winter for hydrating normal skin types
  • Sold in a jar, not usually suitable for pumps
  • Favourite winter medium and for very dry skin
  • Creams are thicker and take time to get absorbed by the skin

What are the Benefits of using a Massage Cream/Creme?

Massage Creams are used to treat and prevent dry, cracked skin while keeping the skin supple and moisturised. Because crème’s skin barrier provides ultra-hydration, they are most often used to treat dry to excessively dry skin and for normal skin during the harsher winter months.

Massage Creams are great for Dry Skin during Winters

Creams may be heavier and richer than lotion and thicker in consistency. For this reason, cream is typically sold in a jar.

Crèmes are the better choice for dry to very dry skin and better for normal skin during the harsh winter months.

Cream provides a barrier that helps keep the skin ultra-hydrated, which is why it is recommended for nighttime use.

Offers deep Hydration

Offering deep hydration while you sleep, various skin care formulas use cream as the delivery to help improve the appearance of aging skin. Creams are often the choice of massage therapists in spas. Select crème’s for massage after water treatments.

Note: Oil-based creams(W/O) (should not be used on your face unless you have excessive dryness. But they’re ideal for dry skin on your hands, feet, and legs.

Two types of Crèmes

  • W/O (water in oil) - greasy - use on hands, feet, legs, body
  • O/W (Oil in water) - non-greasy - use for face
  • o/w creams (e.g. vanishing creams) spread easily and do not leave the skin greasy or sticky
  • w/o creams (e.g. cold cream) are thicker, often, more greasy and more emollient
  • A favourite medium for night creams and hydrating body and face cream
